What is life expectancy?
Life expectancy is the average number of years a person is expected to live based on current mortality statistics. It is a population-level figure, not an individual forecast. A national life expectancy of 80 years means that, given today's death rates at each age, the average newborn would live to about 80.
Period life expectancy at birth is the headline figure reported by the WHO and most national statistics offices. Conditional life expectancy — how long someone is expected to live given that they have already reached a certain age — is usually higher than baseline minus current age, because reaching that age already means avoiding earlier mortality.
Lifestyle factors matter statistically because large cohort studies have repeatedly measured their effect across millions of people. Smoking, physical inactivity, poor diet, heavy alcohol use, and short sleep are each independently associated with shorter average lifespans. The adjustments in this calculator come from that body of research.
How this calculator works
The baseline figure comes from the WHO Global Health Observatory's period life expectancy at birth, split by country and sex. Lifestyle and social adjustments are drawn from peer-reviewed population-level research, including cohort studies in the UK, US, and EU. The adjustments are additive estimates rather than precise medical calculations, and they describe an average effect at the population level, not a personal prognosis. Factors that affect life expectancy
- SmokingNot smoking is the single largest modifiable factor in long-term mortality at the population level.
- Physical activityMeeting general activity guidelines is associated with 2 to 4 years of additional life expectancy across cohort studies.
- DietDiets high in vegetables, whole grains, and unsaturated fats are linked with lower cardiovascular and metabolic mortality.
- AlcoholHeavy drinking is associated with lower life expectancy. Light to moderate drinking has a smaller, debated effect.
- SleepBoth short sleep (under 6 hours) and very long sleep (over 9 hours) are associated with higher mortality in observational studies.
- Body weightHealthy BMI ranges are associated with lower mortality. Underweight, overweight, and obese categories each carry distinct risk profiles.
- EducationHigher educational attainment is consistently associated with longer life expectancy, often as a proxy for income, healthcare access, and environment.
- Social connectionMarried or partnered individuals tend to have higher life expectancy than single, divorced, or widowed individuals on average.
