Tipping customs vary by country. These ranges reflect standard US practice. In many countries tipping is not expected or is included in the bill automatically.
How much should you tip?
In the US, the common range for table service is 15% to 20% of the bill. 18% is widely treated as the default, 20% signals you were pleased with the service, and 25% or more recognises something genuinely above and beyond. Anything under 15% reads as a signal that something was off.
Tipping on the pre-tax amount means the tip is calculated only against the food, drink, or service itself. Tipping on the post-tax total is slightly more generous and is easier to do mentally. Both are accepted in practice — pick whichever is closer to how you think about the bill and stay consistent.
It is acceptable to tip less, or in rare cases not at all, when service was genuinely poor — long waits with no acknowledgement, repeated mistakes, or rudeness. If the issue was kitchen timing or another factor outside the server's control, that usually does not warrant reducing the tip.
