How to calculate a percentage

The core percentage formula is (part ÷ whole) × 100. It expresses a part as a number out of one hundred. If 30 students out of 150 passed an exam, the pass rate is (30 ÷ 150) × 100 = 20%.

To find a percentage of a number, convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply. For example, 20% of 150 is (20 ÷ 100) × 150 = 30. The same shortcut works for tips, discounts, and tax calculations.

To reverse calculate when you only know a result, divide the result by the percentage as a decimal. If you paid $30 after a 20% discount, the original price was 30 ÷ 0.20 = $150. Tab D of this calculator handles that case directly.
