Mean vs median vs mode
The mean is the sum of all values divided by the count. It is the most common measure of centre and works well when data is roughly evenly distributed without extreme values. Use the mean for things like average test scores, average temperatures, or average prices in a balanced dataset.
The median is the middle value when all numbers are sorted. Because it only cares about position rather than actual value, it is much less affected by outliers. Use the median for income data, housing prices, or any dataset where a few extreme values would distort the mean. For example, in a dataset of 10, 12, 14, 16, and 500, the mean is 110.4 but the median is just 14 — a far better picture of the typical value.
The mode is the value that appears most often. It is the only average that works for non-numeric data (such as the most common answer on a survey), and it is useful when you want to know the most typical or popular value rather than the central one. A dataset can have no mode (all values unique), one mode, or multiple modes.
