What is a percentile?

A percentile is the value below which a given percentage of observations in a dataset fall. The 90th percentile of test scores, for instance, is the score that 90% of students sat at or below.

Percentiles show up everywhere measurements get compared — test scores, height and weight charts, income brackets, response times. They convert a raw number into a rank, which makes comparison across different scales possible.

A percentile rank is not the same as a percentage score. Getting 80% on a test means you answered 80 of every 100 marks correctly. Sitting in the 80th percentile means you did better than 80% of the people who took it, no matter what the raw scores were.

How this calculator works

The Find Percentile Rank tab uses the inclusive method: it counts values strictly below your target, adds half the count of values equal to it, divides by the total, and multiplies by 100. The Find Value at Percentile tab uses linear interpolation between the two closest ranks. Different textbooks and software packages use slightly different methods — nearest-rank, exclusive, weighted — so results may differ by a small amount, especially for tiny datasets. This calculator uses the most commonly taught definitions.
