How a weighted average works

A regular arithmetic mean treats every number the same — it adds them up and divides by the count. A weighted average gives each number a weight that represents its importance or quantity. The formula is: multiply each value by its weight, sum those products, then divide by the sum of all weights.

For example, if you scored 80 on a midterm worth 40% and 90 on a final worth 60%, the weighted average is (80 × 40 + 90 × 60) ÷ 100 = (3200 + 5400) ÷ 100 = 86. A simple average of 80 and 90 would give 85 — a different answer because both exams are not equally important.

Weighted averages are used wherever items contribute unequally: GPA calculations (credit-hour weights), investment portfolio returns (position-size weights), purchasing costs (quantity weights), and any survey or rating system where some responses are more representative than others.
